FAQ
Q: Since you live on the East Coast, nowhere near Malibu, why do you call the blog MalibuMentor.com?
A: I used to live in Malibu, California up until 2007. I had the domain name since 2006 and because it has backlinks and age going for it, I decided to move all my blogging activity here. I was in the mentoring business back in 2006. I still do it, but the terms are different and I consider what I do more along the lines of coaching and consulting than mentoring nowadays.
Q: How do you make money from this blog?
A: I sell my own information products here and sometimes I promote affiliate products for which I get compensated when people buy through my link. I mostly recommend things I use in my own marketing activity and see great value in. I also attract clients for my services, consulting, direct response copywriting and coaching. Q: What about the blog?
A: This is a blog which runs on WordPress – a versatile and powerful blogging platform. WordPress boosters believe it’s the best thing since Cheetos, and a monkey could learn it in 15 minutes. Well, it’s not so quick to learn, in my sometimes tech-addled opinion, but it is versatile and something of a standard on the web for bloggers.
If you want to market your services or products online having a blog is one of the best ways to do it. With Hostgator web-hosting you can set up a WordPress blog on your own domain (a “.com”, “.net” or whatever) in a few minutes and start blogging away.
The complexities of working with WordPress are not in getting it going, but in customizing it. Being a do-it-yourselfer (often stubbornly so) I like to muck about with website layout even though my real strength is writing. I still have A LOT! to learn about making blogs like this one appear correctly in most browsers (ie. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) so if this blog doesn’t look right all the time it’s not your fault – it’s mine.
Adding to the intricacies of customizing the appearance of a WordPress blog are the mind-boggling assortment of “plugins” available for it. There are literally 1000s of them! Some of them are stupid and some are intriguing and can enhance your experience as a blogger or help increase the visibility of your blog in search engines like Google.
If you’d like to learn more about WordPress you can go to WordPress.com or WordPress.org – there you’ll find mountains of information about it. This blog runs on a fairly highly altered version of the Atahualpa WordPress theme. I use a whole bunch of plugins and also the Jquery Javascript library for certain effects.
Cheers,
